Most Common File Formats in Embroidery Digitizing

Here’s a detailed overview of the most common file formats in embroidery digitizing:

  • DST: A highly popular format used by many embroidery machines, especially Tajima, known for its reliability and compatibility across various machines and designs.
  • JEF: Frequently used by Janome embroidery machines, this format ensures precision and is suitable for home and commercial embroidery projects.
  • PES: Primarily associated with Brother embroidery machines, this format is widely supported and offers excellent versatility for various design complexities.
  • EXP: Supported by Tajima machines, this format is favoured in professional setups and handles complex designs efficiently, ensuring smooth stitching.
  • HUS: A reliable format used by Husqvarna Viking machines, ideal for precise, high-quality embroidery, and known for compatibility across various designs.
  • VIP: Commonly used for Elna machines, this format supports a wide range of embroidery designs, making it a versatile choice.
  • XXX: A generic format that can be used by a variety of embroidery machines, offering flexibility for different machine brands and models.
  • EMB: A universal format compatible with multiple embroidery machines, making it ideal for sharing designs across platforms and embroidery setups.

These are just a few examples, and other formats are available depending on your specific embroidery machine. Choosing the correct format is essential to ensure compatibility and avoid errors during stitching.

Artwork File Formats: A Guide for Submission

Choosing the right file format for your embroidery design ensures a high-quality finished product.
Here are the recommended formats for your artwork:

  • JPG: Ideal for images with many colours, photos, or scanned images.
  • PNG: Perfect for designs with fewer colours, especially larger areas of solid colours (like text or logos).
  • PDF: Our preferred format, especially if it’s a vector file. This allows for easy scaling without losing quality.
  • EPS, AI, SVG: These vector formats are also excellent choices. Remember to convert fonts to outlines to maintain consistency.

While Word Documents are acceptable, we recommend avoiding embedded images, as they can reduce quality. Instead, send the image separately.

TIFF and BMP are viable options, but their large file sizes might cause issues. Consider using JPG instead.

Please avoid submitting Photoshop (PSD) files, as they may appear differently on our systems, especially if they contain font layers. Save your PSD files as JPG, PNG, or PDF for optimal results.

By following these guidelines, you’ll help us create a stunning embroidery design that meets your exact specifications.
